Welcome to Avocado Baby--A blog to spread awareness about toxins and chemicals in foods, baby products and commonly used household items. When I first became pregnant with my daughter, Addison, I was amazed at how many things pregnant women are told not to eat--no lunch meats or bacon because of nitrates, no unprocessed foods because of bacteria, no hot dogs because who really knows what are in those? No fruits or vegetables unless they are organic because of pesticides and fertilizers, no fish because of high levels of mercury contamination....the list goes on and on. I also learned that I couldn't be around many household cleaning products (which meant my husband, Matt, did all the house cleaning for nine months), I couldn't be around paint fumes (guess who painted the baby room?), amongst many other household products I had to steer clear of. I also learned that there is a chemical in many shampoos and body washes (including baby shampoos) that is called Quaternium 15, which breaks down into formaldehyde. Who wants to rub formaldehyde all over their baby during bath time?
Because there were so many restrictions on what I could eat and what products I could use while I was pregnant, I started reading ingredient labels for everything. I was amazed at how many preservatives, chemicals, toxins and other unknown substances are in so many foods and products! I began eating organic produce, using natural housecleaning products and detergents, and being very careful about the products I use with my daughter, Addison. This blog is dedicated to sharing the information I have learned about toxic chemicals in foods, baby products and commonly used household products with other parents, and providing information about more natural, affordable alternatives that you can feel good about giving to and using with ones you love the most.
Thank you for visiting Avocado Baby.
